Roadmap for
Handling Tantrums and Strong Emotions
HOW THINGS ARE NOW
*Your child melts down when they don’t get their way.
*Your child is overly dramatic… one small thing happens, and they act like it’s a tragedy.
*Your child gives up easily and can’t seem to handle frustration, disappointment, or even you setting any boundaries!

HOW YOU WANT THINGS TO BE
*Your child can be flexible when things don’t go the way they expected or wanted.
*When your child gets upset, they act more proportionately to the situation.
*Your child has tools to cope with the fact that life is sometimes difficult.

If things are not consistently the way you want them to be…
ask yourself these questions and use these tools for long-term change:
1. Are you handling the situation with calm and
confidence?
2. Does your child know how to handle Yuck
effectively?
3. Have you made consistent deposits into their
Emotional Needs Accounts?
If so, use these tools:
Identify which Emotional Needs Accounts are low
Make a plan for consistent deposits
4. Do you have an effective plan for handling their
behavior in the moment?
If not, use this tool:
Create an In-the-Moment Plan
