Yes, this definitely happens a lot! One of the most likely causes of this behavior is a withdrawal from their Significance account. Kids need to know they matter, and they’re not mature enough to say, “Hey, maybe it’s OK if someone else is getting all of the praise and attention for now.”

A good way to help with this is to give them “special” jobs (that only they can do) to help make their dad’s party go smoothly. That way they’re still feeling a part of the day, and they feel important when they know that they’re contributing to its success.
